Music Education and Special Education

All students should be provided an appropriate and accessible music education. In order for music educators to appropriately teach students who qualify for special education services. Music educators must be equipped with a tool belt of research-based strategies that work well in a music classroom setting.

I am researching these research-based strategies and am formulating a potential course for universities and colleges to provide to undergraduate pre-service music educators to prepare them to work with all students. This course would provide insight on the special education system and how it applies to music educators, research-based strategies for the music classroom, and field-experience in working with students with exceptionalities.

I am also preparing a conference/summer class for in-service music educators. This conference/class would provide information on the special education system, provide research-based strategies for the music classroom, provide allies for music teachers to collaborate with from within schools and from the community.

If you are interested in this research and would like to discuss a presentation or conference for your school district, organization, association, or conference please contact me.
